Each year, the Chilliwack Learning Society challenges everyone in Chilliwack to improve their literacy skills by taking the 21 day (February 1 – 21) City-Wide Literacy Challenge. This year financial literacy was the focus, and the challenge went out for Chilliwack residents to do better with their money.
Increasing financial literacy lets us take charge of our money, it turns reactive to proactive and helps us sleep better at night. Make simple changes or tackle more difficult ones to do better with your money. Here’s a list of the 45 ideas we gave to our community for the Challenge.
The Challenge was launched with a short “read aloud” at a Chilliwack Chief’s hockey game. The Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Library Live and On Tour program joined us to issue library cards and waive fines.
Hundreds of books were handed out by members of the Rotary Club of Chilliwack.

We’re really pleased for each of the 109 people who entered the draw because we know they now have more “Money for Living”. Thank you to Mayor Gaetz and Councillor Chuck Stam for drawing the names of 17 prize winners.
We appreciate the 22 organizations who contributed to the event with prizes, promotions, or as a ballot pick up and drop off location.
Leadership for the event was provided by the “Money for Living” Financial Literacy Project Steering Committee.
The City-Wide Literacy Challenge celebrates and encourages family literacy, and is one of the special activities that occur in tandem with Decoda’s Family Literacy Week and ABC Canada’s National Family Literacy Day.
