Volunteer Tutor Training

Our next training session will run Feb 12 from 1000 – 330. It will be a five-hour classroom session, with lunch provided. After the training tutors will be matched with an appropriate adult learner. We do not offer courses for learners, each learner works towards their own goal, using materials that we provide. You may choose to work with an ESL learner, or one of our Canadian learners. Goals vary from wanting to improve conversational English, to learning basic reading and writing skills, to improving understanding of technology in order to increase job prospects. Learner and tutor pairs meet in public locations, not in one another’s homes. They meet either during the day or in the evening, dependent on their schedules. Each tutoring session lasts around 90 minutes. The program has a lot of flexibility.

It is funded through a grant from the Ministry of Advanced Education, which allows us to offer the service at no cost to the learner. The tutor training is also free. Learners stay with the program until their goal is met, or until other pieces of their life prevent them from continuing. There is no deadline for services to end. Some learners have been with their tutors for a few years, while other learners are very short term. We are able to accommodate many different learners in this program. We ask that volunteers commit to the program for 3 months after they are trained.
